Dwyane Wade Follows Michael Jordan As Official Air Jordan Shoes Endorser

Dwyane Wade knocked on the door of Air Jordan Headquarters countless times before they finally gave in and agreed to his wish to let him join Jordan Brand and wear Air Jordan shoes.
Yes at long last he is joining the company.

In February, 2010 Jordan Brand will debut funnily and surprisingly enough the ‘Air Jordan 2010′ to honor 25 years of being in the Michael Jordan shoe business. Mike himself hand picked DWade for this role as his successor and Dwyane (no not Dwayne) was absolutely over the moon when got the news calling it a “a huge honor” to wear Nike Air Jordan shoes.
“I was in awe, because I know what it means to not only be a part of Jordan Brand but really represent Michael on the court in the shoe he would wear,” Wade told AP, “Very excited, to say the least.”

The air jordan 2010 shoe drops across the country on Feb 13th, 2010 and is going for a whopping 170 bones per pair and this shoe isn’t even all that believe me; it really makes you wonder even though they brought back the Legendary Tinker Hatfield to design this Michael Jordan shoe if Michael himself would have even worn this shoe or flat outright refused to wear this sneaker. Lots of people are comparing it to something you can pick up at Walmart which is bad enough while the ridiculous circular window on the Air Jordan shoe is even worse.

I’m actually dying to see how strong the lure of Jordan Brand really is still and whether all of the haters on the sneaker forums/blogs that say they despise this air jordan shoe will actually go and buy it just the same when it actually releases in mid February of next year.

The release of the AJ shoe is conveniently only 4 days prior to Michael Jordan’s birthday and we’re assuming Wade will showcase the sneaker at the NBA Allstar game in Dallas.
People are curious whether Dwyane will give them a sneak peek and rock his new Jordan Brand shoe during Miami’s prestigious Christmas Day game at Madison Square Garden versus the New York Knicks.

The breaking sneaker news was parlayed to the Associated Press a few hours before the official launch event on Wednesday evening in Miami.
“The celebration of the Air Jordan 2010 and our 25th anniversary are the pinnacle of a year full of milestones for me,” Jordan stated in a formal press announcement. “With each shoe, consumers have pushed me to take the next Air Jordan beyond their wildest imagination.”
One person who dreamed the dream and may have been thinking the dream had died was Wade himself who was ecstatic to finally be joining the brand he loves so much.
After six years in the service on Converse in July he’ll finally lace up his Jordans as an official spokesperson (both are owned by Nike).

One thing we know for sure is that he’ll at least be matching the Million per year deal he had with Converse and surely he’ll be making at least Million considering the step up in prestige and market size;c onsidering DWade is the first pitchman for the Jordan shoe Brand since Michael himself.

Wade is continuing to build his business empire with existing deals with Gatorade and T-Mobile continuing to bring in a significant pay cheque.
“One thing I understood coming over to the brand, it’s a team,” Wade said. “I’m fortunate enough to be able to be in a spot with guys like Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, Derek Jeter, all those guys. We all have a role to play. And I’m going to play the role that they signed me up for and hopefully I do the best I can.”
Dwyane’s secret deal with Nike/Air Jordan/Jordan Brand shoe deal was kept hush hush for months with only a few inside the Wade inner circle, such as fellow Chicage native and guy that also idolized MJ growing up, Quentin Richardson, being one of the few select folk to know in advance; Richardson has been rockin’ the Jumpman shoe line during his entire NBA career.
“I think it meant the world to him, truthfully,” Richardson said. “Us being from Chicago, I don’t think people understand…. We adored M.J. We watched every move he made. I think for us guys, it made a big difference. And even before he came over to Jordan, Dwyane would wear it. He’d come over to my house and get stuff all the time.”
As big as if not bigger than being able to officially rep Air Jordan shoes, for Wade, was the capacity to get to know Michael a little better and to have access to him personally as a result of Jordan’s shoe business connection that opens up the lines of communication between the GOAT and his Jordan Brand successor.
“Before this, our relationship was kind of on the basis of seeing him and still being in awe of the person I grew up watching,” Wade said. “Now I can e-mail, call him, all these lines of communication. So I think it’s kind of cool. He responds back to me a lot quicker now than he used to.”

Glory Road – 2 Stars (Average)

Basketball Coach Don Haskins does not have to wait for his legend to happen. He is a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Few today would remember Don Haskins. He was the coach at Texas Western in 1966 when his 27-1 team played Adolph Rupp’s 27-1 University of Kentucky Wildcats for the NCAA title.

Nothing too unusual about that, except that Haskins would become the first coach in NCAA history to start an all-African American lineup when the Miners squared off against Rupp’s all-white Kentucky team that featured two players who would become well-known in the NBA pro league: Pat Riley and Louie Dampier.

Remember these names: Bobby Joe Hill, David Lattin, Orsten Artis, Willie Worsley and Harry Flournoy during February, Black History Month. They were the starting lineup for Texas Western when the Miners won the NCAA championship against an all-white Kentucky team, 72-65.

I would graduate from Michigan State University two months after Texas Western won the title, and would not be aware of just how historic this event was. My high school and college cross-country and track teams were integrated. Kentucky would not even offer African Americans basketball scholarships, and there were many other colleges and universities which excluded African American players in 1966.

There was a lot of hatred in the South at that time. Heck, there was a lot hatred everywhere, but not in Don Haskins’ will to win for Texas Western, known today as UTEP, the University of Texas at El Paso. Haskins was color-blind and simply put the best players on the floor to compete.

Haskins recruited the best players, nothing else mattered. Not even the lousy treatment and death threats both Haskins and his players received from die-hard, ignorant, bigoted Texas Western boosters and donors. They sing a different tune in Texas today, especially at the University of Texas.

Glory Road in 2006 retold the story of Don Haskins and Texas Western. Josh Lucas played the role of Don Haskins, Derek Luke played Bobby Joe Hill and John Voight played Adolph Rupp.

Glory Road is not one of the best movies ever made, but the story of Texas Western is on par with other great victories in sports history, including the 1980 U. S. Hockey team winning the Gold Medal in the Olympics.

Contrary to the movie version, the title game was not as big an upset as was depicted. Texas Western had an excellent team, as evidenced by its No. 3 ranking the final polls that year. Haskins was not the first coach to play African Americans, Texas Western had African American players on its roster before Haskins arrived.

Haskins was the first to start an all-African American lineup in the NCAA title game, and it is also true that Texas Western was the first college in a Southern state to integrate its athletic teams. Good for Texas Western.

Glory Road had a good message of hope for African Americans. At least one coach had the backbone to play the best. Do not think for a moment that this was Don Haskins’ one moment of glory, and that he was courageous but not an excellent basketball coach.

Since Glory Road was not as much about Don Haskins as some very talented, very tolerant and very brave Texas Western players, let it be known that Don Haskins:

1) Played three years at Oklahoma A&M under Hall of Fame coach Hank Iba and was Team Captain.

2) Was tied for 4th place among the NCAA’s most winning active coaches when he retired with 719 wins and 353 losses.

3) Had 33 winning seasons at UTEP in 38 years of coaching.

4) Led UTEP to no less than 17 20-win-seasons, an NCAA title in 1966, 7 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championships, 4 WAC tournament titles, and 21 postseason trips (14 to the NCAA playoffs and 7 NIT-National Invitational Tournament-appearances).

5) Changed college basketball forever by starting an all-African American team against an all-white Kentucky team in the NCAA tournament and winning the title.

6) Coached Hall of Famer Nate “Tiny” Archibald, NBA All-Star Tim Hardaway, and Antonio Davis, and mentored future coaches Nolan Richardson and Tim Floyd.

Glory Road is a film for every basketball enthusiast. It has a great message and represents a great moment in the evolution of basketball as we know and enjoy it today.

Basketball Offense: Motion vs. Set Plays

What is the difference between Motion Offense and a Set Play Offense? Motion offense is the most simple offense to run, but it is also the most difficult to teach well. Bobby Knight believes in his ability to teach players how to play the game and therefore during his entire 992 wins, he taught a pure motion offense. This requires a coach that is willing to “let go” in terms of play calling and teach the players the difference between a good or bad shot. By nature motion offense is a disciplined form of offense that involves all five players screening and cutting to get the best shot available. There are NO predetermined reads in a “pure” motion offense. That means that if your teammate is setting a down screen, as a cutter you are to make the read based on what the defense is doing. If he is playing you tight, you make a curl cut into the lane, and if the defender has beat you to the screen, then you make a backdoor cut. Motion offense allows an offensive player to make the correct read based on what the defender is doing. This takes a great understanding of the game of basketball, but it is difficult to scout and improves as the year progresses.

On the other hand, coaches such as Tom Izzo and Greg McDermott believe in the value of running set plays. In fact, adhering to his football mentality, Coach Izzo often “scripts” his first 6-7 plays of the game. Set plays allow a coach to determine who is going to shoot and where the shot is going to be taken from. Obviously, this control over the offense is suitable to some coaches. For example, with a talented point guard, a coach would have several ball screen sets designed or with a good post player, a coach would have plays designed to screen them into a good post position. A typical NBA team has over 150 sets to choose from with counters! However, the downside of this type of offense is the limited flexibility and what Gene Smithson calls “playing like robots.” Each player has a designated job to do and there aren’t many reads to be made. This can be simple for the players to learn, but you have to remember that it can be simple for the other coach to learn as well. Set plays are good for inexperienced teams or coaches that want to fine-tune their offense based on the talent they have available.

• Coach determines the action ie. Ball screen, post up, flex, etc. • Usually easier to scout

• Excellent for time/score situations because of control of coach • Players must execute their responsibility

• Allows coach to create opportunities for best options in best areas • Teaches a limited understanding of the game of basketball (ie. Screen here, cut there, post…)

• Easier to learn for most players • Players can be confused if they play a spot they haven’t practiced

• Ability to hide weaker offensive players away from the action • Does not develop players as well as other types of offense

• Scouting allows coach to attack how they defend (ball screens, etc.) • Typically not a tournament style offensive system

• Easier to make adjustments during the game

• Position players where they can most likely succeed

• Prepare your team for the opponent has difficulty defending

Which offensive style is better?

This is all based on your coaching philosophy. Are you a motion offense coach like Bobby Knight or are you an NBA coach like Pat Riley? The first thing a coach must do is determine what they feel most comfortable teaching. After that, determine what is the better choice for your team. Do you have a shot clock? If so, then set plays might be the easiest way to go and if not, you can execute until you get the shot you want in your motion offense. Another question to answer would be, how experienced is my team? If you are coaching a youth team then it might be a good idea to run a few sets whereas if you have an experienced group, motion would be an option. Again, this is all dependent on your philosophy of coach, the level you are coaching, and the talent/experience of your players. Choose wisely.
